The Gossip by Ghostpool – a news based WordPress Theme

The Gossip WordPress theme by Ghostpool

I recently got that itchy feeling around my blog theme for Mom On A Spiritual Journey.  I have used the Thesis Theme for a few years now and love the features.

It’s just that the image inside my head for the website didn’t fit the one I could create on the screen.

I still love Thesis and will be making time to learn 2.0 etc. for other sites.  Learning to craft blogs myself using a framework is definitely out there on my wish list.

Howevers, my Precious, it just wasn’t cutting it for the direction I want my Mom blog to take right now.

Time to start searching for a theme

The words that many bloggers dread..we all know there are so many themes out there – and how to find out if the theme will really do what WE want it to do for all our carefully crafted words, pictures and links?

The Mom On A Spiritual Journey blog is important for me because it’s one of the main ways people find me on the inter-webs to have readings, or ask a spiritually-based question of some kind.  After four years of writing, I have over 200 blog posts on there.  Now I know that’s not a lot compared to some blogs – I write my blog posts in between school runs and everything else that comes with it!!

So…I started looking at news based wordpress themes.  There were some for Thesis (such as Quik), but they just didn’t feel right.

I needed something with colors and a light and airy feel

After some googling with my Spirit Guides in tow I found The Gossip!

Now at initial look this theme might seem a little ‘out there’ for a Spiritual Blog.  After all, the energy and vibe of gossip is somewhat different than accounts of Spiritual Journeys.

I loved the colors (quite chakra-like) and thought that the material I’ve written would display well with this blog style.

I’m still tweaking the theme and changing things around, I love the flexibility this theme offers and I’m not a coder, but an informed cut and paster of code…so I can handle it!

What to look for in a new WordPress Theme?

In my case, I am too busy to be designing my own themes right how – however I do want a Theme with a fair bit of flexibility and play-ability.  I get frustrated if I get an idea for a layout and the Theme may not provide it…which is why I liked the Thesis Theme in the first place.

So…my checklist currently is

– good, clear menu system, two menus offered

– SEO Yoast plugin compatibility

– Responsive – (e.g. resizes to a tablet or phone screen and is still usable and readable)

– retina-ready display (hadn’t come across this before in Themes…seems like a good idea with all the new amazing tablets being created out there)

– Multi-browser compatible

– Plenty of sidebar options ~ this theme even allows different sidebars for individual posts or pages.  As a widget-aholic, gotta love that!
